Partial resonance

Diaphragm materials are, unfortunately, not absolutely rigid. Initiated by the voice coil, waves spread through the diaphragm or cone material. These can lead to standing waves in the body of the cone and this, in turn, produces an incomplete frequency response. These effects occur when the wavelength of the energising frequency is equivalent to the geometrical order of magnitude of the diaphragm. This can be prevented only if the diaphragm is extremely stiff, the diaphragm material is internally cushioned or by means of other construction methods.
