Piezo transducer

Skizze: piezoelektrische Wandler

With these drivers, the piezo effect is exploited. If a piezo crystal is subjected to mechanical stress, it generates voltage. This effect can be reversed. If a piezoelectric crystal is subjected to an externally applied voltage it will change shape by a small amount. As a result, it will respond to an oscillating signal. The amplitudes achieved is very small, so this transducer can only be used as a tweeter. The particular feature of this loudspeaker is its impedance. It behaves like a capacitor. At low frequencies, the resistance is very high so the loudspeaker is not subjected to any load. This means that the piezo driver can be run in parallel with other drivers without a crossover. The power-handling capabilities are not given here in terms of watts but rather as the maximum permitted voltage, which is 25 V.
