Ribbon tweeter

Skizze: Bändchenlautsprecher

The classic design of ribbon tweeter consists of a wafer-thin incredibly low-mass aluminium foil positioned between two opposing magnets. The driver principle is the same as that in the moving coil loudspeaker but with the added advantage that the coil and the diaphragm are identical. The ribbon system is one of the most rapid drivers available but is used almost exclusively for tweeters. There are two serious drawbacks: 1. The sensitivity is relatively low. 2. Due to the low impedance, a transformer is required to adapt the amplifier. Isodynamic transducers are sometimes incorrectly called ribbon tweeters.
